argument from emotional hygiene

Tumblr holism: The tendency of some radicals to interpret all actions politically and to organise their social circles through shaming and absolutist ostracism. Discussed at length here. It existed well before Tumblr, of course, but its excesses have been made public and permalinked by that platform.

A further side to this, besides their wanting to punish the immoral and keep their own mind pure, is the weaponisation of vulnerability:

  1. Bad people make spaces emotionally unsafe for the people they are bad toward.
  2. But oppression is intersectional; you can't truly fight oppression x without fighting oppression y.
  3. Thus if someone is bad in terms of oppression y, they can make a safe space for x unsafe.
  4. Thus remove all people anyone regards as oppressive from all safe spaces.
  5. My life should be a safe space.
  6. Therefore remove bad people from my life.

This is a failure even in its own terms - there are irreconcilable problems of competing access between incompatible oppressed groups (e.g. Jews and Palestinians in Western countries).

But of course, in practice this is not argued for at all; tribal shaming is the active mechanism, rather than reason.
